HISTORY OF ZOOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The course B.Sc. Zoology was introduced in the year 1978-1979. The first set of graduates produced 100 percent result with all first class graduates. Since then, the department of Zoology is producing highest percentage of results every year. As a mark of Golden Jubilee Celebration, M.Sc. Zoology was introduced in the academic year 2017-2018. There are 6 regular members, 5 Guest Lecturers in Shift I, and 1 Lab Assistant.

Even though the students educated in this course are not having very good marks, intensive coaching and periodical tests given in the department have uplifted the students to get the highest percentage of results in their university examination. Our students got III rank in the university level during 1989-90 and 1994-95. in the subsequent years also they have secured IV,V,VI & X ranks. Our students got I rank in two subsequent academic year 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. In the same year our students also got 9th, 13th and 17th rank.

Regarding staff position among four permanent staff members of the faculty. The Head of Department and two other members are PhD degree holders.

Tutorial ward system is functioning effectively. Student’s counseling are done periodically. Everyday during the lunch and evening hours, unannounced tests are conducted to evaluate the promptness of the students.

The faculty members have attended. Members of workshops, orientation and Refresher courses are prescribed by UGC. Two of them have presented many research papers in national and international seminars/symposia. The head of the department of Zoology has completed one minor project and sent proposal for a major project to UGC, Delhi for the year 2000. As per the syllabus, the UG Final year students are going on an educational tour to place of Zoological importance. In the year 1999, we have sent proposal to the director of collegiate education. Madras o start M.Sc. special Zoology, which is purely an applied subject. In the year 2002, we have sent proposal to the director of collegiate education, Chennai to start B.Sc, Biotechnology & M.Sc, Biotechnology which in purely an applied subject.

The faculty members have attended a workshop on advanced practical in Zoology on Jan 2004, at E.V.R College, Trichy. A minor project was sanctioned by UGC to a senior staff member of the faculty in the year 2003-2004. On September 27th – 29th, 2004 the department of Zoology have organized a Regional level symposium on Environment Hazard and the way to clean Environment sponsored by UGC. Around 53 papers were presented and discussed in the seminar. There are about 8 special lecturer focused on recent trends in the applied subjects.

Three staff members of the faculty have attended the Quality improvement programme for college teachers for 5 days at Madurai American college on October 2004, as directed by the Directorate of College Education, Chennai.
