HISTORY OF BIO CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT
Introduction
The Biochemistry Department at D.G.Government Arts College has been a centre for
teaching, research and community engagement since its establishment in 1993-1994. Over
the decades the department has combined rigorous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
with applied research, producing graduates who have gone on to careers in academia,
industry, healthcare and public service. The department was founded to meet growing
demand for biochemical education in the region and began life in the College Main building
with modest laboratory facilities
Academic milestones:
Elective Courses like Bioentrepreunership, Bioinformatics, Chemistry for biological sciences and skill enhancement courses like Microbial techniques, Medical coding , Tissue culture and professional competency courses like Molecular diagnostics have been introduced in B.Sc and Skill enhancement courses like Organic farming and Entrepreunership and IPR is added to M.Sc Biochemistry to give a strong emphasis on hands-on laboratory skills, critical thinking, and ethical scientific practice. The curriculum balances classical biochemistry (metabolism, enzymology) with modern molecular approaches (DNA/RNA techniques, proteomics basics) and applications in healthcare and industry.
Recent achievementsGrants Received : The M.Sc Biochemistry students have received student mini project grant from TamilNadu State Council for Higher Education from 2015 for their M.Sc project proposal sent from the College. Naan Mudhalvan Foreign Internship: A student from III B.Sc., Biochemistry has been selected for pursuing Educational internship in KN University, South Korea under Scholarship for outstanding undergraduate Talent (SCOUT) programme by NAAN Mudhalvan Scheme of Government of TamilNadu.
Placements: The Undergraduate and Postgraduate students are placed in leading medical coding companies like Omega, R1RCM private limited and research institutions like Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture and many academic institutions. Faculty Members: The well qualified staff members have got many research publications in UGC CARE and Scopus journals and presented research papers in Universities in India and abroad.
Community Engagement and Outreach Clinical testing camps, school outreach, public lectures, short courses for local technicians, and partnerships with local hospitals or industries.
